Book review: (2012) Mobilites by John Urry. Mobile Lives Forum.

John Urry regarded this book as an extension of Sociology Beyond Societies (2000). In that earlier book, he argued, ‘I never really developed a detailed analysis of just how and why mobilities make such a difference to social relations. And it did not sufficiently distinguish between different kinds of mobility systems and movement, tending to treat them all as rather similar to each other. I will thus seek to complete the project of that book by developing much more developed analysis of different mobilities and what I know call mobility-systems.’

Cultures

A mobilities approach highlights how mobility systems brought about profound changes in the experience of time and space. The railway, the telegraph, the postal system, flying, to name but a few, fundamentally changed everyday life and inaugurated a historical phase where human life became inextricably entangled with, and dependent upon, machines. Some of the articles and book reviews below explore these changes in social and cultural life underpinned by transport and communication technologies.
